In 2020, JCB became the first construction equipment manufacturer to develop a 20-tonne tracked excavator powered by a hydrogen fuel cell - a technology more often found in cars.

We adapted the technology, installing electric motors to deliver the power in an excavator. It worked well. But it had its limitations. So, engineers at JCB Power Systems developed the industry's first hydrogen combustion engine. Using and adapting established engine technology, power is delivered in exactly the same way as a diesel engine. Our backhoe loader, fitted with this new hydrogen engine, can do everything its diesel-powered counterpart can do. 

And the technology is far less complicated than that of hydrogen fuel cells. The most impressive thing of all? Nothing but steam is emitted from the tailpipe. Zero CO₂ at point of use. Hydrogen - the fuel of the future.

JCB was the first manufacturer of construction equipment to get an electric mini excavator into production, replacing the diesel engine with a lithium-ion battery and electric motor to do the digging and heavy lifting.

Today, we offer no fewer than seven different electric models in our compact equipment range that do a full shift of work on a single charge with no loss in performance, including a mini excavator, a Loadall telehandler, a Teletruk forklift truck, a site dumper, a mini dumpster and scissor lift access platforms. 

They can be charged on-site with ease and are zero emissions whilst at work.

We've pushed diesel to its limits, with machines that now emit 50% less CO₂ compared with those manufactured in 2010.

The efficiency of diesel fuelled products can help to reduce carbon emissions in the immediate future and unlocks the use of alternative propulsion. Our LiveLink software has helped us validate these improvements in the field and has been invaluable in helping us quantify our Scope 3 emissions.

HVO offers the potential for reduced carbon emissions in the short term.

All new JCB diesel engines are HVO (hydro-treated vegetable oil) compatible, which can deliver a valuable, more environmentally friendly option for a quick win. 

Known as green diesel, HVO is a viable alternative to its fossil fuel counterpart.
