Understanding hydrogen fuel

Hydrogen fuel is a clean, renewable, safe and transportable fuel – and the ultimate zero CO2 solution.

JCB machines need a net-zero solution that can enable them to work anywhere in the world with maximum uptime. Hydrogen refuelling is the ultimate fast and mobile solution.

On machines, Hydrogen is stored as a gas in cylinders under high pressure. Once the hydrogen leaves the cylinders, it is immediately stepped down to a lower pressure to be injected into the engine. To refuel machines, we need a solution which can fill the machines to 350bar pressure on-site and without external power.

How does refuelling work?

So, how do hydrogen vehicles get refilled? To support hydrogen equipment, JCB has worked in partnership with HyKit to develop a mobile hydrogen refueller.

The mobile hydrogen refuelling station is a flexible, modular solution designed to make getting hydrogen to site as simple as possible. For smaller sites, a single refueller can be towed on a trailer behind a car or van. And for larger sites, multiple units can be delivered on the back of a flatbed truck.

Once on-site, the mobile refueller becomes a deployed hydrogen refuelling station in a matter of minutes, allowing the user to deliver hydrogen via a nozzle into their machine when needed – similar to diesel refuelling today. Mobile hydrogen refuelling can be completed within minutes, without any need for an external power supply, minimising downtime and allowing the machine to get back to what it does best. The mobile refueller can refuel a JCB hydrogen backhoe loader up to 5 times before needing to be recharged back at the hydrogen production site. For a typical hydrogen backhoe loader duty cycle, the refueller would only require recharging once per week – making hydrogen refuelling cost effective for your site.
