What is biodiesel fuel?

So, what is B100 fuel? B100 Biodiesel, also known as FAME or Fatty Acid Methyl Ester, is a renewable, biodegradable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils, animal fats or recycled restaurant grease.

Whether you use it on its own, or as a blend with conventional diesel, biodiesel can make an immediate impact on your carbon footprint because it is 100% renewable. The fuel is also compliant with BS EN 14214 and certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) standard.

Is B100 Biodiesel compatible with my JCB machine?

The short answer – yes. B100 Biodiesel is compatible with certain JCB models. From June 2026, you’ll be able to use B100 Biodiesel in newly manufactured JCB 140X, 145XR, 150X, 220X and 245XR machines.

There are a few different types of biodiesel fuel. Many engine supplies have only approved the use of B10 or B20 biodiesel fuels, which are 10-20% biodiesel and 80-90% mineral diesel, respectively. JCB is one of the only manufacturers with machines able to run on B100 Biodiesel.

We’ve conducted an extensive biodiesel fuel testing and validation programme in conjunction with Syntech Biofuel to ensure our X Series excavators can be operated with Syntech ASB B100 fuel.

How is biodiesel made?

B100 Biodiesel is made from recycled vegetable oils, through a process called transesterification - a chemical reaction that converts the fats and oils into biodiesel. So, how is biodiesel better for the environment? Because of the way it’s made, B100 Biodiesel contains no fossil diesel – which makes it 100% renewable.

Can B100 Biodiesel help me reduce my carbon emissions?

If you are operating machines with Syntech ASB B100, you can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 93% compared to standard diesel. This delivers an immediate and significant step towards net zero, without compromising performance.
