Micro Excavators Operation Guide
Ready to get started with how to use a micro digger? In this guide, we’ll take you through everything from the common uses of our range to operating your machine and using the correct attachments – so you can keep working with confidence.
What are micro excavators used for?
Micro excavators are compact machines, built for precision digging and excavation in tight spaces. With a typical weight of one tonne, these small diggers are known for their ability to navigate the tightest spaces, from narrow pathways to confined areas.
JCB micro excavators are incredibly versatile, with use across a wide range of industries and applications. This includes:
- Trenching and utility work
- Landscaping and site prep
- Construction and demolition
- Material handling
- Fencing and planting
Where can micro diggers be operated?
As the smallest diggers, micro diggers are perfect for use in urban environments, residential yards and interior spaces. When you have limited access – for example in a tricky back garden space or tight alleyway – you’ll need the smallest excavator you can get. Most models can squeeze through gaps as small as 762mm wide, which is a standard doorway.
And if you choose an electric micro excavator, they have zero emissions at the point of use – meaning they can be used indoors and underground without restriction.
Before you operate a micro excavator, it is advised to do some training to learn how to drive a micro digger. Formal training can include getting your CSCS card.
Micro excavators: the lowdown
The key to operating your 8008 CTS or 8010 CTS micro excavator effectively is understanding the basic controls. JCB machines have ergonomic controls that are intuitive to operators – but for a detailed breakdown, head to our quick start guide here.
Pre-operation checks include:
- Check warning lights & buzzer – do not operate if any red engine/fault warnings are active.
- Inspect tracks, dozer blade, boom & attachments for visible damage or wear.
- Check fuel level – low fuel light means only 30–45 mins left.
- Ensure excavator lever lock works and controls move freely.
- Verify ignition system – all indicators cycle correctly, no fault messages.
- Check hydraulic & engine warning indicators (oil pressure, coolant temp, alternator). If lit, stop immediately.
- Confirm extending undercarriage control works and tracks retract/extend smoothly.
- Check surroundings – no obstructions for boom, swing, or travel.
Maintaining performance across different environments:
With ultra-strong digging forces and lift capacity, the 8008 CTS means you can use larger attachments to complete your tasks, while its compact design offers excellent performance in even the most restricted areas.
If you are working on rough terrain, avoid directly digging rocks with your excavator. Instead, we recommend breaking them with a hydraulic breaker before digging, as this protects the machine and improves efficiency.
What attachments are available?

How to operate an electric micro excavator
The key to operating your 8008E CTS electric micro excavator effectively is understanding the basic controls. JCB machines have ergonomic controls that are intuitive to operators – but for a detailed breakdown, head to our quick start guide here.
Pre-operation checks include:
- Turn service disconnect switch ON and disarm immobiliser if fitted.
- Check battery charge level on the display.
- Ensure no red warning LEDs or error messages are showing.
- Confirm blue LED is flashing (ignition ON, motor not running).
- Fasten the seat belt before operating.
- Inspect tracks, hoses, and attachments for damage or leaks.
- Make sure slew lock (if fitted) is correctly set.
- Check surrounding area for overhead obstructions.
- Ensure controls move freely and the operator area is clear.
Maintaining performance across different environments:
The electric JCB excavator offers all the same features as its diesel equivalent – except it’s powered by two 4.8 kW batteries. These deliver up to 4.5 hours of continuous use, which is the equivalent of a full day’s uninterrupted work. This means that if you’re looking to work over long periods, without any drop in performance, the E-TECH model is a great choice.

Which attachments are available for your electric mini digger?
And with the 8008E CTS, you can also get the universal fast charger that can charge your machine within 1 hour 40 minutes – ideal for demanding workload and quick turnaround times.
Do I need a licence to drive a micro digger?
In the UK, you don’t need a formal licence to operate a micro digger on private property or for DIY projects at home. That said, the requirements can differ depending on the nature of the work, the size of the machinery, and any local regulations.
For commercial sites or work carried out on public roads, operators must hold a CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) card. This certification demonstrates that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to operate construction plant equipment safely. Some operators may instead hold an NPORS card, which confirms registration with the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme.
