What is a mini excavator?

Mini diggers are compact machines that are used in a wide range of construction and landscaping jobs. Because they’re smaller than standard excavators, they’re ideal for working in tight spaces or on jobs where you have limited access. Their small size doesn’t make them any less powerful – they can tackle a range of tasks, from grading and demolishing to digging and trenching.

Engineered with versatility in mind, mini excavators have a hydraulic system that controls the boom, arm and bucket for digging and lifting tasks.

What are the specifications of mini excavators?

There’s lots of specifications to consider when you are looking for the best mini excavator for your site.

Operating weight

Mini or compact machines typically have an operating weight of up to 10-tonne, but they can go as low as 0.9 tonnes for ultra compact machines.

Dig depth

The digging depth can depend on the machine class, but it will usually be between 1.5 to 6 meters.

Dump height

The max dump height again will vary from approximately 1.8 to 6 meters, depending on the model’s operating weight and model.

Engine power

Mini excavators can range from 5kW to 55kW. Higher engine power usually means a machine can perform well on challenging ground.

Machine width

The width of a small excavator can vary anywhere between 0.70m to almost 2.5m, depending on its size and weight.

Tailswing

Tailswing is the distance the rear counterweight and upper house extend beyond the undercarriage or track when the machine rotates. You can choose between a conventional or a zero tailswing mini excavator. Conventional tailswing provides greater lifting capacity and enhanced digging performance in open areas, and a zero tailswing is better suited to confined spaces.

What are the different types of mini excavators?

How to choose the right small excavator

Before you dive in and pick a machine, you should evaluate some keys factors to see if it meets your specific requirements.

Consider your project needs
Consider the size of the job site, the type of terrain you’ll be working on and the specific tasks the mini excavator will be performing. Understanding your project will help you narrow down your options and make the best decision for your site.

Assess the size and weight of the model
Are you looking for the best mini excavator for tight spaces? Or is size not as important? Mini diggers come in a range of sizes and weight classes – and this will determine its manoeuvrability and lifting capacity.

Evaluate digging depth and reach
The best mini excavator for digging on your project can vary, depending on whether you are excavating or trenching. Determine the maximum depth and reach you’ll need, as well as the weight of the material you are moving, and then select a digger that can meet (or exceed) your requirements.

Check attachment compatibility
Mini excavators can usually accommodate a wide range of attachments, such as buckets, grapples or hydraulic breakers. Check which attachments are compatible with the digger you’ve chosen, as this can increase the functionality and versatility of the machine. You can explore all of our attachments here.

Compare maintenance and serviceability
Like any machine, mini diggers require regular maintenance - so assessing serviceability is key. At JCB, we offer many maintenance services from machine maintenance, machine repair or just general help. Find out more about JCB Services here.

Evaluate operator comfort
Keeping operators comfortable and safe should be a top priority. For JCB have designed machines around operator comfort, prioritising ergonomic controls, good visibility and climate control, with options like air conditioning or heating and integrated Bluetooth radio.

Should you purchase or hire a mini excavator?

Hiring a mini excavator is generally better for one-off, short-term, or varied projects as you can get access to newer models without maintenance, insurance or storage costs. Prices can vary depending on the length of time you need the equipment for, so it’s a good idea to shop around before deciding.

If you have consistent, long-term work, or you need specific attachments for varied tasks, it’s often more cost effective to purchase a mini digger – so it’s available when you need it and you can brand it however you need. You’ll also benefit from resale value, as JCB machines hold their value over time, and have full control over your machine – as you know it’s service history, how to operate it and you get full access to local dealer support.
