A smarter view on site safety

Construction sites are dynamic places, with heavy machines moving around people, materials and structures. For workers on foot, the risk of being struck by plant equipment is one of the most serious hazards they can face.

UK safety bodies have long highlighted this issue, noting that every year people die because they are hit by moving vehicles or machinery on sites and there are hundreds of preventable injuries and near misses involving plant movements and pedestrians.

To help tackle that risk, JCB has introduced an innovative technology that uses artificial intelligence to improve on‑site safety and support operators at the controls of some of its biggest machines.

JCB’s new AI-powered human form recognition system, JCB INTELLISENSE, is raising the bar for machine safety on construction sites by giving operators and site workers improved awareness and early warnings of potential hazards.

JCB INTELLISENSE is a factory‑fit system which brings together multiple cameras and AI software to monitor the area around the machine, alerting the operator and others nearby if a pedestrian enters a predefined danger zone.

Unlike aftermarket add‑ons, JCB INTELLISENSE is fully integrated into the machine’s electrical and telematics system. Three of the four cameras are powered by AI technology and cover up to 270 degrees around the machine, giving both side and rear awareness. A forward‑facing camera enhances the operator’s direct field of view in line with visibility aids standards.

When a person is detected, the system provides visual and audible warnings inside the cab, and also external alerts to the pedestrian and other workers. The aim is simple yet powerful: help avoid collisions before they happen.

World Leader

JCB INTELLISENSE is currently available on the JCB 540‑140 and 535‑125 Hi-Viz Loadall telescopic handlers from JCB’s world number one telescopic handler range.

The JCB 540-140 Hi-Viz and JCB 535-125 Hi-Viz are built with safety at their core, offering exceptional all-round visibility from the cab, low boom line profiles and excellent stability. JCB’s patented boom design and low boom pivot point ensure improved visibility to the rear and side of the machine, reducing blind spots – especially important on busy sites.

These models also come with other key safety features as standard, including:

  • Full stability control systems
  • Adaptive Load Control
  • Seat-mounted servo controls with deadman switches
  • Factory-fit immobilisers and reversing alarms

In addition to their safety credentials, both Loadalls offer:

  • Fuel-efficient Stage V JCB DieselMAX engines
  • Compact dimensions for tight job sites
  • Proven durability with high-strength boom sections
  • Optional twin auxiliary hydraulics and single-lever controls

The addition of INTELLISENSE further strengthens their position as site favourites with safety at the top of the agenda.

Building Better Plans

But safety is not just about alerts, it’s about prevention and better planning. JCB INTELLISENSE includes onboard data storage with telematics integration through JCB LiveLink. This means the system logs events and can be accessed remotely for review, reporting and safety planning. Fleet managers can see trends, analyse when alerts occur and use the insights to make informed decisions on training and site layout.

This kind of information can be especially useful when planning traffic routes or pedestrian access on site. Manual methods such as marshalling, barriers and signage are essential, but technology like JCB INTELLISENSE adds another layer of protection by helping machines understand their surroundings and react faster.

Why It Matters Now

Construction remains one of the most hazardous industries to work in, even as safety standards continue to improve. According to UK statistics, there are thousands of injuries and significant ill‑health cases reported each year in the construction sector, with moving machinery and plant‑people interface incidents among the top concerns.

Within this context, improved visibility and early warning systems are not just nice to have. They help operators make better decisions instantly and support site teams in creating safer working environments. By detecting people and issuing alerts in real time, JCB INTELLISENSE moves beyond traditional visibility aids and plays an active role in risk reduction.

Innovation in Motion

JCB has a long history of putting operator safety at the heart of machine design. JCB INTELLISENSE builds on this tradition by merging proven hardware with smart software to create a system that understands site dynamics and enhances operator awareness. It demonstrates how technology, when applied thoughtfully, can make a tangible difference to everyday life on site.

As construction sites grow busier and regulations become more stringent, solutions like JCB INTELLISENSE show how machine manufacturers can support contractors in meeting safety expectations while maintaining productivity. It is a forward‑looking feature that reflects JCB’s commitment to developing technology that helps protect people as well as machines.
