JCB HELPS SCHOOL SET SIGHTS ON LIFE CHANGING DEVICE

Horton Lodge Community Special School Donation News

A Staffordshire primary school is a step closer to buying a revolutionary new computer to help children with complex disabilities to communicate - thanks to a £500 donation from JCB.

Horton Lodge Community Special School, in Leek, is halfway to its £11,337 target which is needed to buy a permanent Eye Gaze machine. This will allow the school’s 60 pupils with physical disabilities and additional needs to communicate through eye movements to voice their opinions and access new forms of learning.

The Tobii Dynavox TD I Series Eye Gaze, which is specifically designed to support conditions such as cerebral palsy and Rett syndrome, is fitted with a specialist eye tracking camera mounted on a screen and picks up slight eye movements to select words from various categories which the computer can then voice to communicate with staff or peers.

Emily Osborne, communication lead at Horton Lodge Community Special School, said the team were now hopeful they could raise the remaining £4,800 needed to introduce the technology to the school by the end of the year to benefit pupils aged between aged 5 to 11.

The Eye Gaze machine will drastically improve the lives of our pupils allowing them to communicate and share their thoughts independently with just the slightest of eye movements. For many this will be a life changing moment allowing them to communicate independently for the first time and we are excited to be so close to making it a reality now.

“When trialling the technology, we have seen the confidence and abilities of pupils improve massively and by having a permanent school computer it will mean each of our pupils will now have the independence to have their voice heard. It also means we will have a greater understanding of pupils learning as the machine tracks data to show improvements in vocabulary, understanding and communication.”
