Fact Vs. Fiction: The Truth Behind JCB’s Single-Arm Boom

One look at a JCB skid steer loader or compact track loader and most operators are thinking the same thing – only one arm?

It’s probably followed pretty quickly by another question: Is that really as strong as two?

It makes sense. Twin-arm loaders have been the standard skid steer boom design for years, so two arms can seem synonymous with strength. But here’s the thing: the number of arms isn’t what determines strength. It’s the engineering behind it. 

JCB’s single-arm boom was designed from the ground up to do the work with one. Let’s take a closer look at JCB’s single-arm boom design and separate fact from fiction.

Fiction: Two Arms Are Stronger Than One

Fact: Strength comes from the structure, not the arm count.

JCB didn’t just take away an arm and ask the other one to work twice as hard. The structure was engineered to work this way.

A skid steer or compact track loader boom has to deal with serious forces when it lifts, loads and works under resistance. Traditional loaders divide their boom structure between two sides of the machine. JCB concentrates that structure into a reinforced U-shaped design along one side. The shape, materials and way loads travel through the structure are all engineered around a single-arm configuration.

The structure distributes loads through the arm to help manage torsional forces while maintaining strength and stability. 

JCB also uses more high-tensile steel in the boom than conventional twin-arm designs.

Why does that matter? Because loaders don’t spend their days sitting on a spec sheet. They’re lifting, loading and handling materials on jobsites where the boom is repeatedly working under load. What matters isn’t how many arms you can count from the outside. It’s how the structure manages those forces when the machine gets to work.

Fiction: The Boom Only Matters When You're Lifting

Fact: Where you put the boom changes what’s possible.

Mounting the loader structure along the right side eliminates a second arm on the opposite side of the cab. On machines like the 250T compact track loader, the result is a 270-degree field of vision – up to 60% better than rival machines.

That’s more than a skid steer visibility number. A clearer line of sight to the attachment can help when positioning forks or a bucket. A less obstructed view of the work area can also matter when maneuvering in confined jobsites or working around ground personnel.

Then there’s cab access.

The same single-arm architecture that improves visibility also makes JCB’s side-entry design possible across our skid steer loader, compact track loader and Teleskid lines. Instead of climbing over a bucket, forks or another attachment to reach the cab, operators can enter and exit from the side.

Compared with a traditional twin-arm skid steer boom, JCB’s single-arm architecture reduces the number of pivot points and wear components. The hydraulic system also uses fewer parts than previous models.

Fewer wear components means fewer components that require attention over the life of the machine. Fewer hydraulic parts means fewer potential failure points. For owners and fleet managers thinking about skid steer maintenance and serviceability, those differences matter.

And that may be the easiest part of the design to overlook.

The single arm gets the attention because it’s what you see. But look beyond the arm itself and you start to see what the architecture changes throughout the machine.

That’s the real story behind JCB’s single-arm boom. It isn’t about doing the same thing with one arm instead of two. It’s about designing the machine differently from the start – and letting that decision shape everything that follows.
