Bryonne Skelton – Commercial Sales & Marketing Programme

My first placement was in the demonstration team, which gave me the opportunity to have hands on experience with a range of machinery and expand my knowledge of the JCB product range. This was beneficial when progressing to my next placement which was product specific.  I worked within the Agriculture team where I was involved in the planning of Agritechnica 2015; which is a large agricultural event held in Germany every two years. I was also involved in sales analysis and forecasting of the agricultural product range.

I chose JCB for a number of reasons; the first being the scale and range of opportunity they have to offer. This is because it is a large company with several business functions - no department is the same! Secondly, the opportunity to travel was appealing to me. As an international company and manufacturer there is a lot going on around the world to get involved in.  And finally, as a new graduate starting my career the support and guidance offered to me was what I was looking for: a variety of placements, a relocation package, health care, personal development and training, and the continuous support throughout the programme.

The 15 month Customer and Product Support graduate programme enables you to undertake a range of technical roles working closely with product departments for resolution of engineering concerns and product improvement opportunities. You will work on global improvement projects which develop an understanding of our products, and which allow for innovation in business processes, whilst developing a commercial acumen and technical proficiency to support the product and customer throughout their long-term use.

This programme provides a unique view of the entire product lifecycle from new product introduction through to supporting the customers using our machines.  You will also have the opportunity to experience our global service provision through an international placement.

The Customer & Product Support programme can lead to future roles including diagnostic and prognostic systems engineering, field or technical service engineers, technical product and systems training or project management.

You will be based at JCB World Parts Centre, Uttoxeter which is open 364 days per year; therefore employees on this programme have flexible holidays.

Candidates wishing to apply for this atypical engineering programme should have a real hand’s on approach and be as passionate about JCB as we are.  You will enjoy problem solving and logically exploring options to ensure the correct solution is reached.  We are interested in applications from candidates on an appropriate engineering bachelors or masters’ course who are on track to secure a 2:1 or above.

The Electrical & Electronic Engineering Graduate programme has been designed to give graduates with a relevant degree the opportunity to learn from some of the finest professionals in the off highway machine sector.  During the 16 month programme you will undertake 4 placements in which you will contribute large scale projects, not just working on one small section but on large sections or the entire machine.

You could be fault finding on machines - both hardware and software related, designing, developing and testing the latest systems, as well as working to adapt existing electrical or electronic systems.  You could also be conducting system testing and validation or building and testing new rigs.  Working on CAN based systems and designing or adapting wiring harnesses. With such a wide selection of opportunities the scheme can be as varied as you want it to be.

Whilst working at JCB we offer you mentoring and support as well as focused training so that you can develop your professional and technical skills.  There are many career paths which the electrical and electronic engineering graduate programme can lead to:

Electrical and electronic design
Software design
Applications Engineering

As JCB we are looking for candidates who show a real ‘can do’ attitude and can demonstrate a passionate interest in their area of the business.  You will need to be a logical thinker with a ‘hands on’ approach to problem solving.  Candidates who wish to apply must be near to or have completed an appropriate bachelors or masters degree and must be on track to secure a 2:1 or higher.

Ashley,  Electrical Engineer

Throughout my time on the JCB graduate scheme, I’ve had the opportunity to work at sites in Cheadle, Rocester and now my final role in Uttoxeter.  I am part of the E & E team at Heavy Products, working on both current and next generation large excavators.  My job can include design, development, testing and validation of excavator electrical & electronic systems.

Throughout the graduate scheme I received a range of training, both directly relevant to my role and to the business as a whole. Courses in CAD and electrical design software have proved invaluable.  A residential trip to the Lake District was particularly enjoyable, and allowed me to network with other graduates working throughout the company.

I chose JCB because of its reputation as a Great British engineering company, renowned for innovation. The support and guidance I have received throughout the scheme has been excellent, and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking to develop their skills in this field.

Finance departments in any organisation are pivotal to the success of the business.  Our 2 year finance graduate programme has been designed to provide talented individuals with exposure to areas such as management accounting, cost accounting, internal audit, group reporting, taxation, vat or treasury.

During the 4 rotations you won’t just shadow someone, you will play an active role in the team with your own responsibilities and objectives to achieve.  You will be supported by our experienced finance professionals and finance graduates who have been through the same experience as you.

To ensure you understand the global nature of JCB, there is potential for one of the placements to be based within a finance team overseas.  This is a fantastic opportunity to see how our business functions in another country and provides beneficial experience for your future career and will develop you on a personal level.

We will also financially support your professional development to study ACCA, CIMA or ACA qualification whilst on the programme.

This programme can lead to several career paths such as; management accounting in a business unit, internal audit, project accounting, financial reporting or corporate tax.

To be successful, you must demonstrate a passion for finance and an interest in business and be near to or have completed a bachelors or master’s degree in an appropriate discipline at 2:1 or above.

We are looking for exceptional individuals with strong analytical ability and attention to detail.  You will need to be pro-active and able to work on your own initiative within a team environment.

Sarah, Finance Graduate

JCB is a global company and during my time as a finance graduate I have had the opportunity to work from our offices in New Delhi & Pune, India and Milan, Italy.
The finance graduate program at JCB offers the opportunity to experience a wide variety of roles within the business and to study for a professional accounting qualification alongside. People within JCB are very supportive and easily approachable and have welcomed me into the business.

The General Engineering Graduate programme has been designed for candidates who are passionate about engineering and wish to build on their existing knowledge.  The 16 month programme will enable you to work on real engineering projects to develop your understanding of our products as well as to gain commercial acumen.  The four rotations typically include designing and developing current or new product introduction in business units; group engineering in our innovation centre and a more commercial focused placement to experience engineering from a different perspective.

Following the scheme there are numerous areas you can secure a role in such as; advanced engineering and research, mechanical design and machine engineering, test and development or as a specialist in hydraulics or structures.

We will encourage and support you to work towards professional registration with either IMechE or IET and we will provide you with a mentor to make this career development a success.

We are looking for candidates who have a ‘hands on’ approach and be as passionate about JCB as we are.  Candidates who wishing to apply must be near to or have completed an appropriate engineering bachelors or master’s degree and must be on track to secure a 2:1 or higher.

Alex, General Engineering Graduate

Following completion of the General Engineering Graduate Scheme, I joined Loadall at JCB World Headquarters as a Design Engineer within a team of 3 people designing a new machine, so plenty of responsibility from day one!

When I finished university, I knew I wanted to work in engineering, but didn’t really know what area to specialise in, so the JCB graduate programme was perfect.  I have worked in Research where I was involved in several future powertrain projects; this gave me a great insight into emerging engineering technologies and even the chance to go to a few conferences.  One of my placements was in Structures, where I used FEA software and real life field testing to evaluate the structural integrity of a range of pre-production JCB machines. The graduate scheme really did give me a great opportunity to practise lots of the engineering theory I learnt at university. There is always a lot to learn when you start a new job, especially as a graduate straight out of uni, but everyone I have come across at JCB have always been more than willing to answer questions!

My advice to anyone thinking of applying for the JCB Graduate Scheme is…. Go for it, you won’t regret it – it’s the perfect opportunity to develop your engineering knowledge, be involved in some interesting projects and work for a great company.

We wouldn’t be JCB if we didn’t have world class manufacturing in 22 plants on 4 continents.  Within our ethos of being ‘never content’, we are always looking to improve our factories, facilities and processes and that’s why we need the best manufacturing graduates to join our business.

The 16 month programme will consist of four placements which will give you a variety of disciplines and the opportunity to see our manufacturing operation on various sites.  You could experience a busy quality or manufacturing engineering department in a business unit or a placement in Group Manufacturing looking at manufacturing processes across all sites.

Our manufacturing graduates get exposed to and find full time positions at the end of the programme in departments including; quality; manufacturing engineering, materials, logistics, production planning and advanced manufacturing to name just a few.

We will encourage and support you to work towards professional registration with either IMechE or IET and we will provide you with a mentor to make this career development a success.

We welcome applications from candidates with or expecting a 2:1 or higher in an appropriate engineering degree, but we are also looking for graduates who can demonstrate a ‘can do’ attitude and a sense of urgency.

Nick, Manufacturing Engineer

I have recently completed the graduate programme and I am now responsible for the Compact Wheeled Loading Shovel assembly line – my job involves ensuring that the assembly operators are able to make machines as safely and efficiently as possible. This can include day-to-day tasks such as issuing new equipment, as well as major long term projects to improve productivity. For example I am coming to the end of a £90k+ project to increase the production capacity of the line. That’s a lot of responsibility for someone who has not been in the business for very long!

Over the course of my time on the graduate programme at JCB I have worked in a number of different roles and environments, which has been essential for gaining experience and there have been numerous training and development opportunities, which are specific to your personal development and business needs.

I was attracted to JCB by the range of products that we make, and the opportunities that are available to young enthusiastic engineers, both in the UK and abroad. One of the biggest reasons for choosing JCB is that it is one of the last remaining large manufacturing businesses in the UK, and its logo and products are instantly recognisable across the world.
The graduate programme at JCB is certainly smaller than many of the other schemes that are available, but the result of this is that you get to know the rest of the graduates very well; we frequently have social events outside of work to catch up and have a laugh.

We have designed a specific 18 month Powertrain graduate programme to provide an opportunity for ambitious individuals wishing to build a career in this highly challenging sector.  The programme will allow you to develop an in-depth knowledge and the skills set required in systems design and development of engines or transmissions. There are two streams to this programme; the Power Systems programme focuses on engine development at our plant in Derbyshire while the Transmissions programme is based in Wrexham, Wales.

You will have core placements in design, development, controls & calibrations plus the potential for a rotation at other plants to provide a breadth of experience before heading into your chosen career path.

Typical career paths which can develop from this programme include; engine, transmission or axel system design, applications engineering, project management and advanced engineering, research and sales.

We are looking for graduates who show a ‘can do’ attitude and can demonstrate their passion in Powertrain engineering.  Through our mentoring and development support, graduates will have the opportunity to achieve professional engineer status.

Those wishing to apply for this scheme will be expected to be near to or have completed a bachelors or master’s degree in an appropriate discipline at 2:1 or above.  The Powertrain graduate programme will be run in either Derbyshire or North Wales so relocation to a reasonable commuting distance is required.

Mat, Powertrain Graduate

JCB's Powertrain Graduate Scheme allows you to get a rounded understanding of not only the whole powertrain, but it also gives an insight into the machines themselves, helping you understand the various systems that the powertrain has to provide power to.

I’ve had placements in Engine Development where I was primarily responsible for developing the calibration for the 4.8L JCB engine to ensure it met the tough standards required by new legislation (Tier 4 Final) as well as other internal targets (efficiency, stability, transient capabilities, etc.). This helped me quickly develop my understanding of how the various engine systems work together and the process of fine-tuning different controls to ensure the engine is optimised across a very broad operating range.  I was also a key member of the 8D problem solving team for a major warranty investigation. This allowed me to gain a depth of understanding about one key engine system.  I’ve had the opportunity to spend two months at JCB Transmissions, gaining an understanding of the components our engines interface to in order to better understand the requirements.

The best parts of the scheme for me are that you get to try different jobs to work out what you are good at and what you enjoy, and that you quickly become a key member of whichever department you work in.

The 12 month Purchasing programme is structured in 2 placements to enable graduates to gain a broader understanding of how Purchasing operates within JCB globally.  The placements are designed to give direct experience of a range of purchasing roles in different business environments and will include interaction with our Global Purchasing teams.  We are therefore looking for strong candidates who can demonstrate the drive and determination needed to successfully manage and develop our global supply chain.

You will be allocated a mentor who will provide support and you will receive focused training so that you can develop your professional and technical skills.  You will be given the opportunity to undertake a number of experiential project based assignments at one of more of the UK sites to learn from some of the finest purchasing professionals whilst contributing to the delivery of ‘real’ business projects from day one.

The Purchasing programme can lead to several career paths such as:

Category Buyer (Strategic Category Area)
Production Buyer (Based in a Business Unit)
Product Programme Leader
Supplier Development Engineer

Candidates who wish to apply must be near to or have completed a bachelors or master’s degree in an appropriate discipline at 2:1 or above.  Applications are welcomed from candidates with an engineering background.  To be successful in this role you need excellent communication skills, both written and especially verbal at all levels. The ability to speak a second language is desirable.

Nikki, Graduate, Group Buyer.
I am a strategic buyer and I have a range of responsibilities including developing and working to complete a Global Category Strategy for Wheel Rims. I chose JCB because the company has such a good global brand reputation. In addition, JCB is a global company and can offer graduates many opportunities for progression.

The career advice I would offer to students is to always ask questions and make sure you apply for a company like JCB who can offer you the opportunities to progress. If I had to describe my time at JCB in one word it would have to be rewarding.
