Care for the Community

"Our growth has allowed us to help those people around the globe less fortunate than ourselves." - Sir Anthony Bamford

JCB’s bright yellow machines make a difference in improving people’s lives, but people come first. Sir Anthony explains: “We want a better future for our children, where hard work and dedication are given their just reward.”

The government high school in the village of Jharsaintly, India, used to house pupils in rundown buildings lacking electricity and drinking water. Now, thanks to the Lady Bamford Charitable Trust, these facilities and more have been installed. The Trust provided funding for three English teachers. With the gradual improvement in conditions, pupil numbers have increased from 250 in 2000 to 690 four years later – most of the children being from under-privileged families staying in villages around the school. The Trust initiated a scholarship scheme for the brightest children.

Rebuilding After the Asian Tsunami

Following the tsunami in the Indian Ocean, JCB has been doing all that it can to contribute to the rebuilding and clear-up operations. Oxfam and CARE International have become involved in the JCB Tsunami Appeal, helping to oversee the operation of JCB machines on the ground.

On December 27th 2004, JCB immediately donated £500,000 of equipment to help the recovery and clear-up operations. Within days Sir Anthony agreed to increase the value of machines given to over £1 million after unprecedented support from the public. To date 27 JCB diggers have been donated. Backhoe Loaders and Tracked Excavators are at work in the Tamil Nadu region of India, on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in Indonesia and in Sri Lanka.

When the Asian earthquake struck in October 2005, JCB immediately donated more than £500,000 worth of machines to help in the devastated mountain regions of Pakistan and India. In the Turkish earthquake disaster, which destroyed 60,000 homes, JCB machines were quickly pressed into service to assist in the massive relief effort. Similarly JCB machines were quickly commissioned to help with the Mexican flood disaster in 2005.
